Leading vs. Doing

March 7, 2018

As a Life Coach, I’ve worked with several clients, typically entrepreneurs or executives.   Most have achieved these positions by doing a ton of the work to establish their careers.  And they’re successful in their own regard.  They’re making a living by doing what they’ve always done; being involved in every detail, attending every meeting, responding to every email/voicemail and so on.  And when they were first starting out, they likely needed to be the one doing all this work.  But as time went on and they’ve established their organizations, what I’ve observed in working with these clients is, being the one to do the work vs. leading their teams isn’t sustainable, it results in:

  • A lack of employee engagement – decreased quality, productivity, customer satisfaction

  • Attrition – Employees leaving their organization

  • Impacts to their own well-being - anxiety, stress, sleep deprivation etc.

  • Less than successful Relationships with family, friends, clients

And if all that weren’t enough…their results are limitedLimited to what they know and have done

The opportunity lies in shifting your mindset from doing to leading.  According to the Webster dictionary leading is defined as:  show (someone or something) the way to a destination by going in front of or beside them. or be a reason or motive for (someone).

Being a leader requires you to:

  • Create a vision for where you want to take your team/organization and communicate this vision

  • Take an interest in your employees – strengths, opportunities, passions – and leverage them!

  • Teaching vs. telling them what to do – AKA…stop doing the work yourself!

  • Empower your employees – allow your employees to learn, create, succeed and fail; all by doing the work.

If you want to increase:

  • Employee retention

  • Productivity

  • Profit

  • Meaningful Relationships

  • Self Well being

The results are endless.  So, what do you choose?

Believe in yourself, believe in others…what can that create?
